A Three-Day Journey Through Andalusia: Memories of Winter 2008

Allow me to take you on a journey back in time, to the crisp days early January 2008 when my work had led me to the vibrant city of Gibraltar. During the festive break we embarked on a three-day sightseeing expedition through the heart of Andalusia.

Olvera: A Town of Unexpected Adventures

Out first stop was Olvera, a town that welcomed with its authentic charm. Little did we know, a field awaited us with the stickiest, clogging mud we had ever encountered. Initially I thought we must have been looking for a cunningly hidden geocache, but we didn’t start that hobby for another 4 years! Why we encountered that quagmire might be forgotten, but the act itself became a tale of determination and laughter.

Arcos de La Frontera: Stepping Back in Time

Next on our itinerary was Arcos de La Frontera, a place where history whispered through cobbled streets and whitewashed facades. We lost ourselves in the maze of narrow alleys, each turn revealing a new piece of the town’s rich heritage. From its vantage points, we gazed upon breathtaking vistas that painted the countryside in muted winter hues.

Ubrique: A Unique Retreat in a Hunting Haven

Ubrique, a haven for hunters, offered us a stay in an empty hotel adorned with a display of animal trophies. The walls bore witness to countless adventures, each trophy telling a story of skill, pursuit and, I’d suppose, death. Let’s hope the bodies of these animals were put to use in Ubrique. The juxtaposition of this history against the backdrop of the natural world created an experience that still resonates. We weren’t sad to leave the lonely hotel next morning.

Jimena de La Frontera: Warmth and Hospitality

Our journey concluded in Jimenez de La Frontera, a town that embraced us with open arms. Here, we connected with locals who shared their stories and traditions, leaving us with a sense of belonging. It was the perfect ending to a journey filled with discoveries and connections.

As we returned to our Eurotowers apartment in Gibraltar, we carried with us the memories of this remarkable adventure. It was more than a trip; it was a tapestry of moments that wove together art, history, and the warmth of human connection.

Thank you for joining me on this trip down memory lane. Stay tuned for more reminiscences of exploration, music, and art on adewils.com
