The most fun way to exercise for me is to run, but I can’t run as I’m run-injured. It doesn’t affect my walking though, it’s just the shock of pounding hard surfaces when running that irritates my knee. I’ve got some physio exercises to do, but at the moment I never really get around to doing them.
I like to walk and I’ve recently combined the run and walk into a fast walk most Saturdays at the park. It’s the Parkrun, but it’s also the Parkwalk.
It’s tackled at 902 locations every Saturday morning, and needs loads of volunteers to make things run smoothly.
I’m not the only walker lining up in my park, there are somewhere between 20 and 30 others. That could all be a huge miscalculation though. I haven’t started counting them yet, but maybe I should.
Everyone who shows a barcode (their own parkrun barcode – not for instance a pizza box barcode) gets a time calculated since this week’s event started which is posted on the website.
Unfortunately, the data doesn’t tell you if the person who got the time, walked or ran. I do 5k (or 3 miles) in around 42 minutes. I finish faster than some runners, who run some, then walk some.
I love it when they say “You’re walking it and you’re passing me!” as they flail away behind me. I say encouraging things like “Not far now” or “We’ve got this” to them and to myself!
At 9:00am on Saturday I again hope to be skulking at the back behind the runners and soon having fun overtaking some of the slower starters.
